2011 CensusAtSchool National Competition - Get Started

The 2011 CensusAtSchool National Competition is now closed - However your class can still take part in the Phase 10 questionnaire and use all the linked lesson plans and resources. 

Set homework in previous lesson
Give the CensusAtSchool Parents'/Guardians' questionnaire (PDF, Word) to learners to take home for completion.  This needs to be brought in ready for the CensusAtSchool lesson.

Get Started on the Phase 10 online questionnaire
This needs to take place in a computer room with Internet access.

Learners will be asked to measure their height, foot length and open arm span so measuring equipment will be needed in the classroom.

Some learners will take less than the whole lesson to complete the online questionnaire. ‘What is a Census?’ is an excellent resource to use in this lesson as an introduction to the census. (Access to the Internet is needed for this resource.)

Hard copies of the CensusAtSchool Phase 10 questionnaire (PDF, Word) can be given out for discussion and completion before completing this online, it can be projected on the board or the learners can complete the whole questionnaire online.

These ‘Students Notes’ (PDF, Word) give step-by-step instructions on how to access and complete the online questionnaire.  All you need to add to this word document is your LEA code, school code, the school name and the class name. 'Teachers notes' can also be found here PDF, Word.

When the learners have finished the questionnaire, ask them to create an electronic poster. Send one electronic poster to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it before 1st March 2011. This poster can be created electronically or be a digital photograph of a paper poster. The theme of the poster should be based on one of the following:

• data learners have collected themselves;
• data from other sources (e.g. from CensusAtSchool, Office for National Statistics or other relevant secondary data sources);
• censuses, (e.g. the history of the census, family trees, history of names). 

Please send only one poster from your school.
